چکیده

Einstein deduced (very briefly on p. 834 of [1], and in slightly more detail on pp. 820-822 of [2]) that the gravitational deflection of light according to general relativity is twice the “Newtonian” value. Einstein did not deduce the acceleration of light (or that of other fastmoving particles), which has perhaps left the impression that the acceleration at the surface of the Earth is no different from that in Newton’s theory (because curvature of space occurs only over large distances in “outer space”). Indeed, the topic of the acceleration due to gravity in Einstein’s theory seems to be rarely discussed. It appears in somewhat disguised form in sec. VC of [7] (titled “Laboratory experiments to test relativistic gravity”), where I interpret eq. (6.18) as implying

Response Spectra of Structures under Subway Induced Vibrations

Passing underground trains induce vibrations transmitted to the ground surface and the nearby structures. Ordinarily, these vibrations do not result in structural damage but can harm nonstructural elements and disturb the occupants. These effects are more pronounced when evaluating buildings like hospitals, laboratories, museums, etc., and their assessment is an important design need. To respon...

Four different types of a single drop dripping down a hole under gravity by lattice Boltzmann method

In this paper the dynamic of a droplet on a surface with a hole is investigated under gravitational effect by using lattice Boltzmann method. Incompressible two-phase flow with high density ratio proposed by Lee is considered. Cahn’s theory is used to observe the wettability of the surface in contact with liquid and gas phases. Several parameters such as contact angle, surface tension and gravi...

INTERVAL ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK BASED RESPONSE OF UNCERTAIN SYSTEM SUBJECT TO EARTHQUAKE MOTIONS

Earthquakes are one of the most destructive natural phenomena which consist of rapid vibrations of rock near the earth’s surface. Because of their unpredictable occurrence and enormous capacity of destruction, they have brought fear to mankind since ancient times. Usually the earthquake acceleration is noted from the equipment in crisp or exact form. But in actual practice those data may not be...

The impact of gravity on life

Gravity has been constant throughout the history of Earth. This simple fact masks the complexity of gravity as an evolutionary force. Gravity is a vector, i.e. a force that has magnitude and direction at each point in space. Gravitational loading is directional toward the center of the Earth. Gravitational loading acts on all masses at the Earth’s surface and defines the weight of each object. ...

Comet Hazard to the Earth

Migration of trans-Neptunian objects to the Earth is considered. Due to the gravitational influence of large trans-Neptunian objects and mutual collisions, some objects can get such orbits, from which they can be moved inside the Solar System under the gravitational influence of planets. About 10-20% or even more 1-km Earth-crossers could have come from the Edgeworth-Kuiper belt and can move in...
